This nerve-racking experience has remained fresh in my memory for almost a decade. I was crouching on the ground about 2m from my vehicle to get that great low angle which I knew would make this shot when the matriarch of the herd, who had until then been drinking quietly about 30m away, took interest in me. She sauntered closer, and closer until eventually I didn’t dare take another photo, or breathe for that matter. She paused briefly, looking down her majestic nose at me, before continuing on her way. The rest of the herd followed suit. At no point did she show any sign of aggression, she was simply curious about this unimposing creature who had ventured into her domain.
